Is the Mazda 5 ULEZ Compliant?
Based on 12,356 MOT tests, around 71% of Mazda 5s still on the road are likely to meet London's ULEZ standards, and about 20% are likely to be charged. For the remaining 9%, it depends on the exact Euro standard or month of registration.
The fuel mix matters: tested cars were 73% petrol, 27% diesel. Every petrol 5 in the data (2005 onwards) is likely to be compliant. Diesel 5s in the data are mostly from years that are unlikely to comply.

How ULEZ rules apply to the 5
Cars that miss the standard pay £12.50 for each day they're driven in the zone. Petrol and petrol-hybrid cars need Euro 4 (most from 2006), while diesels need Euro 6 (most from September 2015).
- Petrol (73% of 5s tested): every year in our data is likely to comply.
- Diesel (27% of 5s tested): most cars in our data are from years unlikely to comply.
5s from 2014 and 2015 sit on the boundary (9% of those tested): some were built to the required standard before it became compulsory. The Euro standard is sometimes on the V5C logbook, or Mazda can confirm it. Our ULEZ calculator can help.

Buying a used Mazda 5 for London: what the MOT data shows
The Mazda 5s in this data were first registered between 2005 and 2015. 2008 was the most common year, with 2,317 tests (19% of the total), and half were registered in 2009 or later.
5s from likely-compliant years passed their MOT first time 51% of the time, at an average of 103,946 miles. Older ones likely to be charged passed 54% of the time with 100,412 miles on average, so check a compliant car's condition as carefully as an older one's.
On a budget, the oldest petrol 5s likely to comply are from 2006. 807 of them were tested; 2006 cars passed first time 47% of the time and averaged 113,470 miles. Check the Euro standard on the V5C before you buy one from around then.
Whichever year you choose, check the 5's weak spots. The most common MOT failures were suspension: "ball joint excessively worn" (11.3% of tests) and "pin or bush excessively worn" (5.9%); lights and electrics: "not working" (10.1%). The most frequent advisory was "tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm", on 22.9% of tests.
Overall, 53% of 5s passed first time, well below the 71% average for all cars, and they had covered 101,213 miles on average, more than the 73,145-mile average.

About this data
Based on 12,356 first MOT tests of the Mazda 5 carried out in 2023.

ULEZ results are estimates from fuel type and year of first registration. Transport for London makes the final decision.
