Is the Toyota Prius ULEZ Compliant?

Based on 159,790 MOT tests, around 98% of Toyota Priuses still on the road are likely to meet London's ULEZ standards, and about 0% are likely to be charged. For the remaining 2%, it depends on the exact Euro standard or month of registration.

The fuel mix matters: tested cars were 100% hybrid (petrol). Every hybrid (petrol) Prius in the data (2001 onwards) is likely to be compliant.

How ULEZ rules apply to the Prius

Cars that miss the standard pay £12.50 for each day they're driven in the zone. Petrol and petrol-hybrid cars need Euro 4 (most from 2006).

  • Hybrid (petrol) (100% of Priuses tested): every year in our data is likely to comply.

Buying a used Toyota Prius for London: what the MOT data shows

The Toyota Priuses in this data were first registered between 2001 and 2023. 2019 was the most common year, with 16,949 tests (11% of the total), and half were registered in 2015 or later.

Every Prius in the data is from a year likely to comply, so age and condition matter more than ULEZ when choosing one. The newest (2023) passed first time 94% of the time at 41,384 miles on average, and the oldest (2001) passed 60% at 127,947 miles.

On a budget, the oldest hybrid (petrol) Priuses likely to comply are from 2006. 3,665 of them were tested; 2006 cars passed first time 62% of the time and averaged 152,742 miles. Check the Euro standard on the V5C before you buy one from around then.

Whichever year you choose, check the Prius's weak spots. The most common MOT failures were lights and electrics: "not working" (5.1% of tests) and "inoperative in the case of a single lamp or all lamps" (2.6%); visibility: "does not clear the windscreen effectively" (2.3%). The most frequent advisory was "tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm", on 9.8% of tests.

Overall, 79% of Priuses passed first time, noticeably above the 71% average for all cars, and they had covered 125,551 miles on average, more than the 73,145-mile average.

ULEZ results are estimates from fuel type and year of first registration. Transport for London makes the final decision.
