Is the Toyota MR2 ULEZ Compliant?

Based on 11,045 MOT tests, around 8% of Toyota MR2s still on the road are likely to meet London's ULEZ standards, and about 41% are likely to be charged. For the remaining 50%, it depends on the exact Euro standard or month of registration.

The fuel mix matters: tested cars were 100% petrol. Petrol MR2s are generally compliant from 2006, while petrol cars from 2000 or earlier are likely to be charged.

How ULEZ rules apply to the MR2

Cars that miss the standard pay £12.50 for each day they're driven in the zone. Petrol and petrol-hybrid cars need Euro 4 (most from 2006).

  • Petrol (100% of MR2s tested): likely compliant from 2006; 2000 and earlier are likely to be charged.

Buying a used Toyota MR2 for London: what the MOT data shows

The Toyota MR2s in this data were first registered between 1985 and 2007. 2003 was the most common year, with 1,311 tests (12% of the total), and half were registered in 2001 or later.

MR2s from likely-compliant years passed their MOT first time 74% of the time, at an average of 73,004 miles. Older ones likely to be charged passed 67% of the time with 105,818 miles on average, so a compliant car is usually the more reliable buy as well as the cheaper one to drive in London.

On a budget, the oldest petrol MR2s likely to comply are from 2006. 784 of them were tested; 2006 cars passed first time 75% of the time and averaged 70,672 miles. Check the Euro standard on the V5C before you buy one from around then.

Whichever year you choose, check the MR2's weak spots. The most common MOT failures were brakes: "efficiency below requirements" (9.6% of tests) and "inoperative on one side" (4.8%); lights and electrics: "not working" (6.4%). The most frequent advisory was "leaking excessively from engine", on 10.1% of tests.

Overall, 67% of MR2s passed first time, noticeably below the 71% average for all cars, and they had covered 94,542 miles on average, more than the 73,145-mile average.
